William BeHurst's (Broadhurst) Will from 1826

This is William Broadhurst's will from 1826. It was provided to me by Nancy Foster (Thanks!). Finally, one more piece to the puzzle. As stated earlier in this blog, William married Frankey Harrill in 1787 in Fauquier County, Virginia before moving back to North Carolina. William and Frankey are the parents of John (Jack) Broadhurst, twin brother of Joe, born in 1797, in Wayne County, North Carolina. What was he doing in Fauquier County, Virginia?? Smithfield, NC Broadhursts & "Holy Blood"?

Much speculation has abounded in recent years around the so called 'holy blood line' first reported on in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail. The line preportedly began with a child born to Jesus and Mary Magdalene. Soon after the crucifixion Mary fled to France where the line was carried by the Frankish King Merovech and the subsequent Merovingian dynasty. Today the most 'sacred' or pure branches of the line (ie those with the most male descendents) are said to survive in Europe under secret society protection. Fascinatingly there is good evidence for a direct and reasonably pure line from the Merovingians to one Nancy Lee Broadhurst (late) of the U.S. (Smithfield, NC) Click here for more info!!

Smithfield's Early History

In 1787, Springfield Plantation was owned by John Bryan. It lay along Swift Creek, across the Neuse west of Smithfield. John Bryan had inherited this property from his father, William Bryan, a leading citizen of the county at the outbreak of the American Revolution. The elder Bryan was known as Colonel Bryan. His wife, a sister of John Smith Jr., was Elizabeth Smith Bryan. The Bryan ancestral home stood scarcely a mile west of Smithfield, near the intersection of today’s highways to Raleigh and Angier.

The tobacco received at Smithfield during late colonial times, or rather at Springfield, was packed into hogsheads, loaded on flat boats, and sent down the river to New Bern, where cargoes were transferred to vessels that carried North Carolina products to England.
